Whatever Works star Evan Rachel Wood and actor Alan Cumming have officially been cast in the upcoming Broadway musical Spider-Man Turn: Off the Dark. The production, which features music by Bono and The Edge and will be directed by Tony-winner Julie Taymor (The Lion King), is set to begin previews Feb. 25, 2010, at the Hilton Theatre. Both actors have worked previously with Taymor on film (Wood in Across the Universe and Cumming in Titus and the forthcoming The Tempest).
Wood is slated to play Mary Jane Watson, the love interest of hero Peter Parker, while Cumming will play Spider-Man's nemesis, Norm Osborn, better known as the villainous Green Goblin. Earlier this year, Wood let slip that she had been cast in the musical, but this is the first official word that confirms what she said.
Additional casting, including the lead role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, has yet to be announced. Producing team David Garfinkle and Martin McCallum said in a statement, "We are thrilled that Evan and Alan are on-board and we look forward to announcing further casting, including the webslinger himself, very soon."
