Universal Pictures is resurrecting the 1991 comedy Drop Dead Fred, this time as a starring vehicle for actor-comedian Russell Brand.
The comedy film depicts Phoebe Cates as a woman who loses her job and husband within her lunch hour and after returning to her family home is reunited with her anarchic childhood imaginary friend, played by Rik Mayall in the original.
Though the film had tanked at the box office at that time, it acquired a cult classic status over the years. Forgetting Sarah Marshall star Brand will take the lead role as the problem-causing fictional friend, Hollywood Reporter said.
Land of Lost scriptwriter Dennis McNicholas will write the script for the remake. Brand's last screen outing was in Adam Sandler family film Bedtime Stories.
