Mel Gibson's wife, Robyn Moore, has filed for divorce from the Oscar-winning actor and director after 28 years of marriage, Access Hollywood has confirmed. She signed the divorce papers on Thursday and filed the papers on Monday morning in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the separation.
They both asked for privacy in a joint statement released on Monday. "Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so," the statement said.
However, reports said they had actually been living apart for almost three years. Their marriage has reportedly been under strain ever since the actor was arrested for driving under the influence in 2006 and his anti-Semitic remarks made to police officers during his arrest.
Robyn, who has seven children with Gibson, has requested spousal support and attorneys' fees. She is also seeking joint physical and legal custody of their only child who is a minor, Thomas.
According to TMZ, there is no prenuptial agreement between the couple, who married in 1980, before Gibson's wildly successful acting career. Gibson's fortune was estimated at $900 million in 2006, and California laws would entitle Moore to 50 percent of his earnings and properties. Robyn's divorce attorney is Laura Wasser, who has handled other high-profile divorces for celebrities including Angelina Jolie and Britney Spears.
