Octomom's newfound celebrity reached a fever pitch Tuesday night as she brought home the first two of her eight babies. After seven weeks of speculation and criticism, Nadya Suleman is making the first steps towards being a mother of 14. The Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center, where Suleman gave birth to premature octuplets in January, has just released two healthy baby boys to the mother.
The babies are Noah Angel, known as Baby A, and Isaiah Angel, known as Baby C, according to the Kaiser Medical Center. The medical staff at the hospital noted that they were able to maintain their body temperature, could drink from a bottle and gain weight. Both babies now weigh in at 5 pounds or more.
"This is a happy moment for everyone – the family, physicians, nurses and entire NICU staff," said Dr. Mandhir Gupta, neonatologist at Kaiser. "It is always rewarding whenever a premature infant goes home as a healthy baby," he added.
Nadya brought the infants to her new house in La Habra, California, while members of the media and spectators crowded around to see them. She was sitting on the back seat of a SUV with her babies, who were covered with blankets.
Before the babies could be released from the hospital, Child Services had to inspect Suleman’s new home and see that the house was child-proof and equipped with everything required to raise 14 children.
Two pediatric nurses from the non-profit group Angels in Waiting, along with two recently hired nannies, will be on hand to help out should she need it. But Suleman insists, "I really want to do all this by myself."
According to a statement from Kaiser Medical Center, the remaining six babies continue to progress well at the hospital. All continue gaining weight as they get formula or donated breast milk. Two more of them will reportedly be released in a week.
Suleman's six older children, who are now still with their grandmother at her Whittier house, are expected to move into their new home by this weekend.
