Actor turned Philanthropist Brad Pitt has incorporated his passion for architecture into one of his foundations. He is giving back to the community by financing the rebuilding of houses in one of the most devastated areas of New Orleans three years after Hurricane Katrina.
His Make it Right Foundation went in and has begun building eco-friendly homes in the lower Ninth Ward. So far, six houses are finished and two more are under construction.
Another 14 are scheduled to be built in 2009.The foundation was set up to construct more than 150 energy-efficient houses in New Orleans which was rocked by Katrina in 2005 and made thousands of people homeless.
Pitt, who pledge five million dollars of his own money to start the foundation, traveled to New Orleans personally to see the progress of the home construction.
“I'm really happy for the families that are going to be here, but I can't help but think about the families that aren't. It’s a push-pull for me. The excitement is that it's being proven, that it's working. The frustration is that we have a long way to go," Contactmusic quoted Pitt as saying.
“You're going to see 100 homes here, mark my words. It's nice to see a few, but I'm anxious to see 100, 150, 1,000. It’s amazing. This place that suffered such injustice and so much death can become one of the primary examples of a high-performance neighborhood. It really is amazing."
Pitt, who loves architecture, is featured on the cover of the January 2009 issue of the toney Architectural Digest to help bring focus to his work regarding rebuilding homes in New Orleans.
