With yet another film debuting at number one, Shia LaBeouf has bragging rights to the title of King of the Box office as he steps into the same league as Will Smith and Tom Hanks. His movie Eagle Eye, which also stars Michelle Monaghan, took in over $29 million at the U.S. box office in its first weekend on release, according to early studio estimates.
It's the second number one debut for LaBeouf and director D.J. Caruso, who also teamed up for Disturbia last year.
LaBeouf has also scored chart topping box office debuts with leading roles in Transformers and Indiana Jones: The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull.
Richard Gere and Diane Lane's romantic drama Nights in Rodanthe was a surprise high debut at two in the new countdown, with over $13 million, and Samuel L. Jackson's thriller Lakeview Terrace slipped from last week's number one to three.
Meanwhile, Spike Lee's World War II drama Miracle at St. Anna was the week's biggest flop - it opened poorly with just $3.5 million and just made the top ten at nine.
