Sir Paul McCartney and girlfriend Nancy Shevell have been on a road trip across the USA, driving an old 89 Ford Bronco and taking a cheap car vacation staying in campground and motels.
The former Beatle was cruising on the infamous Route 66 - which stretches from Chicago to LA - when the couple stopped at a Circle K to get gas and use the restrooms. A car full of local young guys on their way to St Louis for a Cardinals game yelled out "That looks like Paul McCartney!" One yelled "Hey, Paul!" and Paul answered in his distinctive Liverpool accent.
The excited guys got to talk with Paul and he posed for the above photo with them.
But when the State Journal Register published the picture. the newspaper was inundated by readers insisting it was a hoax and the picture was photoshopped.
They couldn't believe Sir Paul McCartney was actually, truly, really physically present in Springfield, IL. Why, an Elvis sighting they could believe - but not a Beatle!
There was also a "Paul spotting" in Bennett Springs State Park in Missouri at a campground where a camper ID'd them: "It was incredible to see one of the world's richest musicians going back to basics. They didn't seem to have a care in the world as they laughed and joked with each other."
The campers reported that after spending the night in a tent, Paul and Nancy set off on a day hike.
Paul's not currently on the road thought - he flew home to London over the weekend to celebrate the birth of his sixth grandchild, and daughter Mary's third child.
Let's hope he's got the Bronco in short-term parking at the airport and will resume his trip soon!
