With a box office take of $107.3 million since opening last Tuesday, Will Smith has scored yet another milestone as 'Hancock' becomes his eighth movie to open at No. 1 and his fifth movie to debut at No. 1 over the Fourth of July.
"Will Smith, Mom, apple pie and the Fourth of July. It doesn't get any better," Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony, told the Associated Press. "People just so relate to him and the characters that he plays. They totally embraced it as something different, something fresh."
Smith's other movies to open big over the weekend of the Fourth, include Men in Blacks I and II, Independence Day and Wild Wild West.
The character Hancock, played by Smith, is a foul-mouthed dirtbag crusader of a superhero who dresses like a bum. The film has had very mixed reviews and critic thought Smith might actually have a bomb on his hands.
This just goes to show that you don't bet against Will Smith at the box office.
