Spanish Tennis God Rafael Nadal not only denied the Swiss Tennis God Roger Federer a record sixth straight Wimbledon title today, he dethroned the five-time champion with an epic 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-7 (8/10) win. It was the longest, greatest, and most brilliant championship match in the tournament's history.
"Roger, I'm sorry for the final," Nadal said after his victory.
Don't apologize Rafa! Remember you were runner up the past two years losing to Federer as the two men continue their great rivalry.
The ever-improving 22-year-old Nadal wins his first Wimbledon and already has four French Open titles. In Paris, he is undefeated having won all 28 matches played at that tournament.
"If I win here, probably one of the most important wins in my career," Nadal said of Wimbledon last week in a huge understatement, adding, "If I win Sunday, my career is changing a little bit more."
Now you've got it, Rafa. He's also become something of a celebrity as he reported on his blog that for the first time ever, there were 8 paparazzi waiting for him when he left a restaurant with his family after having dinner Saturday night.
Oddly, the outcome doesn't change the top of the world rankings. Federer keeps the No. 1 spot, where he's been for 231 weeks, while Nadal will stay No. 2, a position he's held for 154 weeks.
