Producer J.J. Abrams and director Matt Reeves sound like they are having trouble coming up with a script - hell, even a concept - for 'Cloverfield 2'. That barely-seen monster is still rampaging through Manhattan and crushing building, cars, choppers and eating folks but Abrams wants to do something "fresh" and "unique" for a sequel.
A reporter asked Abrahms if a prequel or a sequel shot by steady cam (by a new character) would work again but the 'Lost' producer isn't revealing much on how he might do the next one.
The monster-goes-Godzilla on NYC original - one of the most exciting and frightening sci-fi horror films made in years - just won the Science Fiction Film of the Year at the Saturn Awards.
The genius in the first one was making it with a hand-held video cam in the hands of the characters - much like the Blair Witch Project - but the result is far more terrifying. The special effects were dazzling - makes you wonder how they did all of that for under $25 million?
"It's not dead in the water," says Reeves of a possible Cloverfield 2. "It's probably more sort of on hold. The thing that we promised ourselves is that we only wanted to do another one if we could come up with something that felt as fresh to us as [the original did]. We're still toying with what it's going to be and whether or not it's going to be as exciting to make and, hopefully, for an audience to watch [as the first one]."
