While her co-stars Penelope Cruz and Rebecca Hall soaked up the sun and the adulation at the Cannes Film Festival for their Woody Allen film 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona', Scarlett Johansson stayed home in New York City having a hissy when the studio wouldn't pay for her extensive diva demands.
The film, which was well received in Cannes, got a 10-minute standing ovation Saturday night after a black-tie audience saw the film.
As for Scarlett's odd absence, a New York socialite snapped: "Nobody cared she wasn't there", and adding that "The movie belonged to Penelope and Rebecca anyway with great help from Javier Bardem."
Apparently, Warner Brothers distributors of 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' in France had spent weeks negotiating with the 23-year-old Scarlett's reps about flying her to Cannes.
The studio was willing to pay for flights, hotel, limos, gown designers, as well as hair and make up people, but Scarlett was reportedly demanding her own exclusive make-up consultant at a cost of 5,000 Euros a day, which was felt to be a tad rich for a 4-day trip where looking after the star's dresses and powdering her nose would cost a total of 20,000 Euros.
Then Scarlett had issues with staying at the same centrally located hotel as her co-stars. Allen and the leading ladies were delighted to be staying in Cannes to make it easier for them to attend screenings, public events and to do interviews for TV and press. But for some odd reason, Scarlett insisted she wanted to be put up at another hotel some 25 to 30 miles away.
"It was crazy. Penelope and Rebecca were going to be working very hard and it wasn't acceptable that Scarlett would be having to come in from that distance every day, most likely turning up late and it would have thrown schedules into a lot of confusion," an ex with the film told the Daily Mail.
"Also, I think, while Woody's terribly fond of Scarlett, he was a little upset that she wasn't being a team player."
