American Idol's loopy judge Paula Abdul had a few too many before last night's show. In other news, dogs bark, the sun came up today, and Charlie Sheen hires hookers. What's this? Paula was so shit-faced she passionately criticized Jason Castro for a song he hadn't yet sung. When Randy Jackson corrected Paula and she said, “Oh my God, I thought you sang twice … You know what? This is hard!”
This is what went down: After the 5 Idol contenders sang a Neil Diamond song, they joined Ryan Seacrest on the stage and he asked the judges to assess their performances midway through the show.
Looking confused and dazed, Paula started reading her "notes" (the show is scripted after all) and told Castro, “Jason, the first song I loved hearing your lower register, which we never really hear. The second song, I felt like your usual charm wasn't...it was missing for me, it kind of left me a little empty. And the two songs made me feel like you're not fighting hard enough to get into the top four.''
Hold up, sister! Jason had only sang one song!
The crowd snickered and Seacrest and the other contestants looked a bit shocked. Seacrest told her: “Paula, you’re seeing the future, baby. You’re seeing the future.”
So much for the "live" stuff. Either Paula sees the dress rehearsals and forms her opinions then, or she's given notes written for her by the show's producers.
Paula tried to talk her way out of it by claiming it was David Cook's notes she was reading. She said, “You know what, I’m looking at, it’s your notes, David, you’re fantastic, and it was the song that wasn’t known.” However, Paula raved about David later in the show, so her explanation is hard to believe.
