Liz Hurley has settled a ‘slave labour’ law suit filed against her by her former maid, who claimed the actress paid her just $2.40 an hour.
Violet D'Souza, from India, says she worked at Hurley and her husband Arun Nayar’s London home for between 60 and 70 hours per week for four years, for which she was paid 8,000 rupees a week ($200).
This works out as around $2.40 an hour, which is below the $10.76 legal minimum wage in the UK.
D'Souza was scheduled to appear at an employment tribunal to make the allegations against Hurley, who is worth around $26m. But the case was dropped last minute after D’Souza was offered a reported five-figure settlement.
"We can confirm this claim has been withdrawn and the pre-hearing review has been cancelled but cannot discuss the reasons," a spokesperson said.
