Heath Ledger was killed by an accidental overdose of six different prescription drugs, tests have revealed.
The 28-year-old actor died in January in a Manhattan apartment he had been renting.
The city medical examiner's spokesperson said Ledger died "as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects" of painkillers, anti-anxiety drugs and sleeping pills.
"What you're looking at here is the cumulative effects of these medications together," spokesperson Ellen Borakove said.
Ledger’s father, Kim, responded to the results, saying: While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy.
"Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."
The drugs found in ‘Brokeback Mountain’s star’s blood were: the painkiller Oxycontin, anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Xanax, as well as ibuprofen and sleeping pills, Restoril and Unisom.
The actor’s body has been flown to his native Australia for a private burial. His funeral is expected to take place in Perth, his hometown, this weekend.
