George Clooney has officially been appointed as a United Nations peace envoy at a New York ceremony.
Clooney, who flew into the city following a trip to the Darfur region of Sudan, will promote the UN’s peacekeeping missions around the world.
The 46-year-old actor was accompanied to the ceremony by his parents.
Clooney co-founded the Not On Our Watch humanitarian group, which aims to draw attention to Darfur’s people and has raised over $9.3 million for the region.
"You hope that somehow... if you just shine a really bright light on these things it's harder to get away with it," Clooney said.
There are eight other peace messengers, including actor Michael Douglas.
