With Hollywood writers still out on strike and actors refusing to cross the picket lines, the Golden Globes have canceled the awards show due to fears that no stars would show up. With no celebrity stars, that meant no presenters, no winners, no entertainers, and no one sitting in the audience. Instead, they'll announce George or Denzel or Keira as best actors at a press conference and send 'em a Globe via Fed EX.
The awards, which are selected and presented by the peacock and a bunch of foreign critics, will still go on since they are desperate to have some influence on the ballot voting for the Academy Awards and those are mailed out later this month.
In a press release, NBC and the critics stated that recipients of Golden Globe Awards in the 25 categories will instead be revealed during an hour-long press conference at The Beverly Hilton to be covered live by NBC News beginning at 6:00 pm PST on January 13:
“We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007’s outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television,” said Jorge Camara, President of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association. “We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year’s Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled.”
The traditional dinner including the show of the Golden Globes could have been boycotted by approximately sixty actors and possible winners such as George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie and Keira Knightly, who intended to express their solidarity with the Hollywood scriptwriters on strike since 5 November.
