Hollywood's best actor Johnny Depp has just signed on to play legendary gangster John Dillinger, once dubbed "Public Enemy Number One" in 1934 by the FBI during the Depression-era crime wave in Chicago. Excellent casting. Now who will they cast to play Dillinger's gang member, Baby Face Nelson?
The film, entitled "Public Enemies," will be directed by Michael Mann. It's based on Brian Burrough's nonfiction book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34". Filming will begin in March in Chicago.
Mann has previously directed "Miami Vice," "Collateral," "The Insider," "Heat" and "The Last of the Mohicans."
The bank robbing Dillinger was idolized by many poor Americans at the time and looked upon as a type of Robin Hood figure. He was captured and escaped from prison several times, the last when he carved a fake gun out of a potato and painted it black.
