Honor student and hip-hop star Lil' Romeo has been awarded a hoop scholarship to attend the University of Southern California next fall. Although Romeo announced his intentions to attend USC last spring - so it's no surprise - yesterday he officially signed his letter of intent at a press conference at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills.
Romeo's father Master P was also a ball player and had try-outs with two National Basketball Association teams in the 1990s.
Romeo is currently a senior guard at Beverly Hills High who averaged 13.9 points and 5.6 assists last season. Not great numbers but the scholarship offer may have been part of a deal where USC also got to sign Romeo's friend Demar Derozan to play for the Trojans. Whatever. USC is still a good choice for Romeo since he plans to attend the film school there to further his acting career.
DeRozan, the 6-foot-6 Compton High guard who is considered one of the top prospects in the country, said he wanted to help put USC's basketball program "back on the map." Which is exactly what USC freshman phenom O.J. Mayo is trying to do on the courts this season - and he's considered to be the possible No. 1 pick for next year's NBA draft.
