Nicole Kidman says she lost then husband Tom Cruise's baby when she was just 23. Speaking in the current issue of Vanity Fair, Kidman said: “From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies. And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic. And that’s when it came that we would adopt Bella."
“There’s a complicated background to that, given that I never speak much about many things. One day maybe that story will be told.” She added.
Tom and Nicole kept quiet about the miscarriage and that decision led to rumors about their love life and their ability to have children. But there's more. She reveals she also had a second miscarriage when she was three months pregnant at the time of her break-up with Cruise after their 11 year marriage.
The couple’s adopted children Bella and Connor are now 14 and 12.
Nicole said of her desire to have baby with current hubby Keith Urban: “I’m yearning to have one. I think I would be very sad if I wasn’t able to have a baby. Keith knows I want one and he has been getting there slowly.”
“My husband really wants a couple of years of, he said, ‘where I just have you’. It’s kind of romantic. It’s really honest. So as a woman I sort of hear that loud and clear and go, ‘OK, I get that’.”
The actress says she and Urban got together because they were lonely. She said her isolation was brought home to her after she won her 2003 Oscar for The Hours.
She said: “You’re in a hotel and you’re like, OK, I’m sitting in this big suite with an Oscar and I still don’t have a life. What is wrong with me? It hit home that I needed to get a life. Who do I celebrate with? That was painful, not having that person to share it with.”
She also hinted in the interview that she was engaged to a mystery man before she married Keith. Rumors are now circulating that it was none rocker Lenny Kravitz.
