A man who tried to extort over a million dollars from Tom Cruise has committed suicide at his Arizona home.
The 47-year-old David Hans Schmidt was facing up to two years in jail for attempting to extort money in a case involving stolen photographs of Cruise's wedding to Katie Holmes.
Schmidt was under house arrest, ahead of a court appeared on 11 October where he was due to plead guilty - his lawyer has said.
"I was greatly saddened by his loss and I found him to be a very kind man," his lawyer, Nancy Kardon, said.
Schmidt had previously tried to sell images of Paris Hilton, along with the heiress' diaries.
