Heath Ledger and his Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams have ended their three-year relationship together, both People and Us Weekly report. The pair met on the set of Brokeback Mountain in 2004. They have apparently hit a rocky patch this summer and a source reports they "did all they could to make it work" before quitting each other in August.
Williams, whose breakthrough role came in TV's Dawson's Creek, admitted earlier that caring for the couple's two-year-old daughter Matilda had initially placed strain on her professional commitments.
"We started promoting [Brokeback Mountain] about three weeks after Matilda was born, which was too soon.I'm learning lessons now, like learning how to be a working mom."
There is speculation as to whether or not the couple is legally married. They were rumored to have tied the knot in a private civil union earlier this year, though legal documents for the alleged vow swap never surfaced, and reps for the couple failed to comment on the speculation.
