Madonna’s adoption of a Malawian child has been hit with even more problems after a social worker assigned to the case was refused permission to travel to the UK.
Malawi official Penstone Kilembe was due to monitor baby David’s progress during two trips to the superstar’s home in London. But the Malawian Government has stopped the visits, which Kilembe says may cause Madonna’s adoption to “crumble”.
"The whole adoption process may crumble and David [could be] sent back to his village," said Kilembe, who is director of child welfare services in Malawi.
It’s reported a different official will now travel to London but human rights lawyer Justin Dzonzi says the adoption could still be in jeopardy.
"The court will not listen to anyone else apart from the one it appointed," he says.
In October 2006, Madonna was custody of one-year-old David Banda for 18-months. For the adoption to receive final approval, Madonna must show the child is being properly cared for.
