Matt Damon’s new film ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ has topped the North American movie chart. It raked in $70.2m (£34.4m) over the weekend, making it the biggest August opening for a movie.
"We're really riding high today," said head of distribution at Universal Pictures, Nikki Rocco, of The Bourne Ultimatum's success.
"The reviews and audiences rated this one the best one yet," she said, adding Matt Damon was "the new James Bond".
Last week’s number one on the chart, The Simpsons Movie, fell one place, after earning $25.6m (£12.5m) during its second week of release.
The film was the most popular movie at the international box office, figures have shown.
At three on the chart was a new entry, Disney’s ‘Underdog’, and Adam Sandler’s 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry' fell to number four.
‘Hairspray’ completed the top five.
