Growing up, R+B star Amerie was banned from having a beau as her mother felt that "boyfriend" was a bad word in the house..
The 27-year-old sultry singer admits her mom's traditional Korean values meant any potential suitors were off limits which made dating difficult.
She says, "My mom is very traditional, and she didn't understand the concept of dating. She didn't understand why I'd ever want to call someone a boyfriend. It was a bad word in our house.
"We were just supposed to call them friends. If I had a boyfriend now, my mom would still only call him my close friend."
Being a singer probably wasn't what mom had in mind either. The half-African American, half-Korean singer says that “all Korean parents” want their children to grow up to be lawyers, doctors or professors.
“But my sister’s a lawyer, so we have a lawyer now,” she says. “I might be a professor later, maybe in my 70s or something.”
