Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron is being sued for wearing the wrong watch on the red carpet. Luxury watchmaker Raymond Weil hired Charlize to be the spokesmodel for their $7000 Shine watches in an endorsement deal reportedly worth an estimated $20 million (£10 million). But then Charlize showed up at a Texas film festival wearing a wristwatch by Dior. Oops.
In her capacity as an “international ambassador” for the company, Charlize was responsible for showcasing and promoting the limited edition line of diamond-covered Shine watches, which sell for $7,000 and have straps made of gold or alligator skin.
In their lawsuit, Shine watches now say Charlize is guilty of breach of contract and promoting a competitor's watch. And they want their $20 million back.
"If you're the model for Ralph Lauren, you can't show up wearing Gucci at the AcademyAwards. She undercut our entire ad campaign," Contactmusic quoted Weil attorney David Jaraslowicz as saying.
"We spent a fortune on an ad campaign centred around her, then she goes off and makes us look silly in the industry by wearing Dior," added the attorney.
