Jerry Seinfeld, dressed in a yellow-and-black bee suit, took a dive off the 8-story Carlton hotel roof in Cannes yesterday to promote his new film. "Bee Movie" is an animated comedy that features the voices of Seinfeld, Renee Zellweger, Matthew Broderick and Chris Rock.
After the acrobatic stunt the comedian joked, "They tell me Scorsese did the same thing last year for The Departed."
Using a wire, Seinfeld glided off the roof of the Carlton high above the famed Croisette Parade, all the while exchanging banter over a loudspeaker with Chris Rock who was supporting his pal from the relative safety of the beach below.
The film features Seinfeld as Barry B Benson, a restless New York bee on a mission to end human "theft" of honey. Rock, who lends his voice to the character of a mosquito philosopher, joked about Seinfeld's stunt: "You know, even Borat just showed up in his underwear."
"Bee Movie" began as a joke Seinfeld told backstage a few years ago. He recalled that he was eating a red Twizzler when he said, "I'd like to make a B-movie called Bee Movie." The pun became reality when he had dinner with Steven Spielberg ("for a Jewish boy on Long Island, having dinner with Steven Spielberg is like having a second bar mitzvah"), and the DreamWorks partner took it seriously.
