Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams is to join the Chicago production of the musical The Colour Purple.
26-year-old Williams will play blues singer Shug Avery when the Broadway production tours Chicago in April.
"This is just a dream come true. I could not pass up the opportunity to do The Color Purple. To have the privilege of even auditioning was an honour for me," Williams says.
‘The Color Purple’’s producer Scott Sanders says the singer is perfect to play Shug as she’s the character who has “seen the world”.
"I've always liked the idea of finding an actress for that role that really brings that sort of otherworldly sensibility," he says.
"And so Michelle, living outside the Broadway community, but yet having the capabilities and the chops to both sing and act it, we just thought was great."
Destiny’s Child, which also featured Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland, split in 2005 to pursue their solo careers.
