Madonna reportedly broke down and cried in front of friends recently because of the hammering she has taken in the media over her adoption of African baby David Banda. During a dinner party at her and hubby Guy Ritchie's London townhouse, the singer reportedly cracked under the strain of the negative response to the adoption.
She tearfully told guests that she didn't understand why the adoption had turned the public against her. "I haven't been this hated since I brought out my Sex book back in the early Nineties."
"What have I done to deserve this?" the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.
And while Madonna insisted that she didn't mind the controversy she has caused over the years, this attack on her had become "personal", and that it was now hurting her family, "Controversy is fine. But this. . . well, this is different. It's personal."
A source close to the singer revealed that she was at "her lowest ebb" and that she is considering moving back to the US.
"She's seriously down about it all and harboring resentment towards everyone who she feels has stitched her up. She feels victimized - even Angelina Jolie has turned on her with critical words about the adoption, for goodness sake. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
"In the midst of all this, none of her friends have stuck up for her. As far as Madonna is concerned all she did was to rescue a poor, ill boy from terrible poverty in Africa, but all she gets is aggravation," the source said.
Adding to Madge's woes is also the fact that among the people who have "abandoned" her is also her husband who is also reportedly blaming her for the negative reaction the adoption has caused. "Even Guy doesn't miss an opportunity to tell her this is her own fault. She feels abandoned and rejected," the source added.
