Former tennis great Chris Evert lost more than a quarter of her hard-won fortune after divorcing her second husband, Andy Mill.
Even though the Olympic skier and pro sport fisherman received a chunk of his former wife's $23 million (£12 million) wealth in the settlement, he told the Palm Beach Post on Monday: "it was the worst day of my life".
Part of the divorce settlement included Mill receiving $7 million in cash, a $3.9 million home in Aspen, Colorado, and several expensive autos.
The couple had been married for 18 years and have three sons, ages 15, 12 and 10. Evert, who won 18 Grand Slam tournaments during her tennis career, will retain custody of the boys while Mill is to receive "reasonable" visitation rights.
"Now I need to concentrate on being the best father I can be to our boys because they're the most important things in my life," Mill said. "Chris understands they need me as much as they need her. We need to reestablish a balance in our lives."
When rumors of marriage trouble surfaced in October, her spokeswoman, Tammy Starr, said: "He loves Chris, but he knows they can't be married. They were in therapy. Chris isn't known to show much emotion, and that's how she's been handling this. Andy is the kind of guy who used to cry when he talked about her."
