Sir Elton John says he wishes all organised religion was banned, and has blasted it for trying to "turn hatred towards gay people".
The out-spoken singer went onto say organised religion turned people into "hateful lemmings" in an interview with the Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears for a special gay edition of the 'Observer Music Monthly Magazine'.
"I think religion has always tried to turn hatred towards gay people," Elton said. "Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays.
"But there are so many people I know who are gay and love their religion."
Elton adds while there are “some wonderful things about it", he thinks it would be best to ban religion completely”.
He says: “organised religion doesn't seem to work. It turns people into hateful lemmings and it's not really compassionate."
