Sacha Baron Cohen has topped the US box office chart with his movie, ‘Borat: Cultural Learning of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’.
The controversial movie took $26.4m (£13.9m) in the US and Canada at the weekend, which is over double that estimated. It was expected that the movie would only open in the top five.
‘The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause’ opened in second place after taking $20m (£10.53m).
‘Borat’ managed to top the box office chart opening in under 850 cinemas, while ‘The Santa Clause 3’ debuted in nearly 3,500.
In third place was the animated comedy ‘Flushed Away’, which took an estimated $19.1m (£10m). The movie is about a pet rat who gets flushed down a toilet and features the voice of Kate Winslet and Hugh Jackman.
Last weekend’s number one, ‘Saw III’ dropped to fourth place and Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘The Departed’ is in fifth place.
