Sarah Michelle Gellar and Amber Tamblyn's ‘The Grudge 2’ has topped the North American box office chart in its opening weekend, fighting off competition from last week’s number one - ‘The Departed’.
The horror sequel - about an angry spirit - took $22m between Friday and Sunday, whereas the Leonardo DiCaprio starring ‘The Departed’ made £18.7m.
Although it didn’t make two weeks at number one, the movie is on its way to becoming director Martin Scorsese’s biggest hit. If it earns over $102.6m, it will beat his biggest earner to date, ‘The Aviator‘.
Man of the Year, with Robin Williams as a comedian elected president, took the number three spot on the chart $12.6m.
‘The Devil Wears Prada’, which stars Meryl Streep, has pulled in the biggest audiences worldwide for the second week running, taking an estimated $22.7m in 44 areas.
