A set of Kate Moss pop art style paintings by Banksy have been sold in London for nearly $100,000 setting an auction record for the controversial graffiti artist’s work.
The six prints, which featured the model painted in the style of Andy Warhol's colourful Marilyn Monroe pictures, sold for five times its estimated value.
"It's quite sensational to go over five times the low estimate. I believe Kate Moss was happy about Banksy using her image in an iconic way,” a spokesperson for auctioneers Sotheby's says.
"It's not often we sell works with spray paints but we'll be seeing a lot more of Banksy as he seems to be building up a global presence," she added.
Banksy’s stencil of a green Mona Lisa with paint dripping from her eyes sold for $100,000 at the action.
The artist has shot to fame with controversial stunts like hilariously tampering with Paris Hilton’s album, replacing store copies with his own remixes - giving them titles such as
‘Why am I Famous?’ and ‘What Have I Done?’. He also changed the sleeve to show the socialite topless and with the dog’s head.
Last month, he placed a life-sized model of a Guantanamo Bay detainee inside Disneyland in California.
His work has become so high-profile that Angelina Jolie recently spent over $376,559 on Banky’s work at a Los Angeles sale. He’s also won over celebrity fans like Brad Pitt, Jude Law and Keanu Reeves.
