A child rights group is determined to stop Madonna from adopting an African child and has threatened legal action to stop the fast-track adoption.
One of Malawi's leading children's organisations, Eye of the Child, is said to be furious that the superstar’s adoption has been rushed through so quickly and say they will get a court injunction to stop it unless the Government intervenes.
“It's not like selling property. It is about safeguarding the future of a human being," a spokesperson for the organisation said.
Madonna and husband Guy Richie obtained custody of one-year-old David last week, but were not allowed to return the child to the UK with them as his passport has not yet been processed.
British charity PACT has blasted the bending of adoption rules - under which Madonna would normally have waited two years to bring the child home - for the star.
Madonna was able to get a fast-track adoption after her lawyers persuaded a judge in Malawi that it was a “unique case" and the child would have a better life in the UK.
But a PACT spokesperson says: "Adoption must never be allowed on a whim and the lengthy process is there to protect everyone involved. This is wrong in every sense."
David's father has agreed to the adoption but some of the family have doubts.
Madonna has agreed to fund an orphanage in Malawi.
The singer’s rep has said: "Final legal arrangements are being made to bring David home to his new family."
