‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ has been voted the scariest slasher movie of all time in an online poll.
The 1984 movie, which features the terrifying killer Freddy Krueger, beat off competition from both older and more recent horror films to take the title.
2004 film ‘Saw’ was voted into second place by Yahoo! Entertainment readers and the 1974 classic ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ followed in third position.
"The slasher genre may be as popular as ever with more and more slasher movies coming out every Halloween, but it seems it's the classics that still scare people the most,” Yahoo! Entertainment editor Jayne Cherrington said.
"Modern slashers like Saw have more special effects and more violence, but if classic film character Freddy Krueger is still king of the scares film studios may have to re-think what scares people."
1,000 people voted in the poll.
