Shakira leads the nominees for this year’s Latin Grammy awards, having notched up an impressive five nominations.
The hip-shaking Colombian songstress is nominated for best record, song and short music video for ‘La Tortura’ and best album and female pop vocal album for ‘Fijacion Oral Vol. 1’.
Shakira has not won a Latin Grammy since 2002, but her ‘Fijacion Oral Vol 1’ album did scoop the best Latin rock/alternative album at the 2005 Grammys, and female Latin pop album at the Latin Billboard Awards.
The 7th Latin Grammy ceremony will be held in New York on November 2. The awards honour the best of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking artists.
"Practically all the nominations today reflect a brush-stroke of every aspect of Latin music and Shakira is one of those," Gabriel Abero, president of the Latin Recording Academy, says.
It’s no surprise that Shakira’s ‘Fijacion Oral Vol 1’ made the nominations list. In the first week of its release in the US, it sold 157,000 copies were sold - the highest for any Spanish language album.
