‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ director Michael Moore has blasted claims that piracy, the internet and DVD sales are to blame for low box office takings, saying it’s “because the movies aren't very good anymore”.
US takings for movies fell by 6% last year and this summer’s figures slumped with ‘Poseidon’ and ‘Mission: Impossible 3’ not meeting their predicted profits.
But Moore says that sell-outs at his Traverse City Film Festival are proof that people will still pay to watch good movies.
The Motion Picture Association of America revealed in March that 240 million fewer tickets were sold in 2005 than the previous year. However, overall this year, box office takings have risen this year compared to last.
