TMZ broke the news today that Mel Gibson copped a plea to his drunk driving charge and is getting off easy, as his lawyer cut a deal with the prosecutor's office and the actor was given three years of probation and some light fines. His career and reputation though, are still taking a beating.
Under the deal, Mel pleaded "no contest" to a misdemeanor of driving with a .08 blood alcohol level or higher. The misdemeanor count of driving under the influence was dismissed as was driving with an open container of booze. The actor agreed to three years probation, to attend Alcoholic's Anonymous three times a week for a year, pay $1200 in fines, and have his driver's license suspended for 90 days.
Mel also volunteered to enter a rehab program immediately - which means that earlier reports that he had already done so were false.
As far as his reputation as a Jew-hater, he's apologized but he can't do anything about the internet videos, some of which are pretty funny.
