‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest’, which stars Johnny Depp, has set an opening weekend record at the North American box office.
The movie took $132m (£71m) in its first three days, smashing the $115m (£62m) record set by ‘Spider-Man’ in 2002.
The ‘Pirates…’ sequel took nearly three times the opening weekend total set by the original movie two years ago - which also starred Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom.
"When people in the industry predicted these high numbers, I thought they were just trying to be mean," the movie’s producer, Jerry Bruckheimer. has revealed
"No matter how good we did, if we did $100m, we'd be failures. I didn't think we'd get near these numbers."
Last weekend’s chart-topper, ‘Superman Returns‘, was forced into second place. ‘The Devil Wears Prada‘ was in third place, Adam Sandler rom-com ‘Click’ was number four and the animated film ‘Cars’ completed the top five.
