Matt Dallas Stars in Kyle XY

Posted by Fara Kearnes on July 25, 2006 4:38 PM |

Matt Dallas picUntil his arrival on Monday night TV, Matt Dallas had only a handful of professional acting gigs, one of which was to speak a single line on "Entourage". Now the lead on the ABC Family channel's quirky new summer series, the career of the Phoenix native is about to rocket. The 23-year-old plays a lost boy of 16 who we might learn is an alien, or maybe a clone, but will "Kyle XY" gain enough audience for a second season so we can find out?

"Kyle XY" is a sachirine family show with a pair of do-good parents, a skanky sister who loses her virginity IN THE BUSHES (eeeww!) and a smarmy little brother who needs a good pummeling. So Kyle is found nekked in the woods and taken to Juvie and -- with a plot hole big enough to pilot a space ship through -- the pyschiatrist mom immediately brings this strange boy to her own home -- then tells the teenage daughter to "look after" him. As if!

Anyhoo, this wierd but beautiful boy who has supernational powers, no memory, and a Tarzan-like primitive understanding of social graces, moves in and starts sleeping in the bathtub. And he can take apart and reconfigure a mainframe server in about two nanoseconds, so like right away, the dad suspects the 16-year-old is "different".

Matt's Kyle is a wooden, handsome, blue-eyed, and otherwise perfect savant teenager. If he is an alien, then he is stereotypically innocent and naive as aliens who masquarade as humans always are. And he has no belly button, so there's that mystery. Real aliens wouldn't miss such an obvious detail so maybe Kyle is a clone and therefore wouldn't need one since he was "born" at age 16.

Kyle XY isn't as deep as say, Joan of Arcadia, but we're only a few episodes into it so we can hope for good developments - like better dialogue, although lines like "Somebody juice me" are promising. Kyle XY is sort of Smallville meets Roswell or the X-Files and promises to be a mix of teenage love and the usual government Men In Black who are hunting Kyle. So why the XY at the end of his name? Was he a lab experiment like Dark Angel's Max?
