"You have just won 'American Idol,'" Simon Cowell told Taylor Hicks last night after he finished his third and final song in his competition against rival Katharine McPhee. Well, we'll find out tonight if the voters agree with Simon. If anything is to stop Taylor's quest for the title - it might be the memory of that awful purple velvet smoking jacket he wore. Katherine looked and sang great as always and it's a safe bet to say that both finalists will do well in their careers after "American Idol" - no matter who wins.
The geeky gray-haired 29-year-old, who looks 40, is from Alabama and likes to sing in bars, while Katherine is Hollywood-born and has been groomed for a career as a singer by her vocal-coach mother. Still, she tends to just miss as Simon pointed out after she sang "My Destiny" telling her she went from brilliant to just good.
Meanwhile, after Taylor sang "I Want to Make You Proud," Simon responded with: "Assuming I was right about it coming down to the third song, you have just won American Idol."
Or maybe not? Fellow judges Randy Jackson and the sobriety-challenged Paula Abdul then jumped on Simon, reminding him that he voted against Taylor even making the final round and that it was their two votes which overruled him. We'll find out tonight how America votes.
