Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are celebrating the birth of their baby girl, it has been announced.
The baby, named Suri, was born in Los Angeles and weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20 inches long, a spokesman for the couple Arnold Robinson has said.
"Both mother and daughter are doing well," a statement revealed. It also revealed the origins behind the baby’s name. Suri means “princess” in Hebrew and “red rose” in Persian.
Suri is 27-year-old Katie’s first child, while 43-year-old Tom has an adopted son and daughter from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.
The media has been buzzing with rumours about the birth for weeks, the most memorable being that Katie would have to give birth in silence in accordance with Scientology rituals, to the blown-out-of-proportion joke that Tom would eat the placenta. But details surrounding the birth have not been disclosed.
Last June, “War of the Worlds” star Tom announced he had proposed to the “Dawson’s Creek” actress at the Eiffel Tower. A date for their wedding is yet to be announced.
