Sharon Stone has been awarded substantial damages from a newspaper which claimed she neglected her four-year-old son to dine at a restaurant.
The Daily Mail had printed the “Basic Instinct” star had left her son with a driver while she ate dinner at the famous The Ivy restaurant.
"The article conveyed the clear allegation that Sharon Stone had neglected her son in a shameful and selfish way," her lawyer has said, and she had no choice but to seek damages to set the record straight.
The Daily Mail printed a photo of Sharon’s child and a driver sitting the front of the car, stating the actress left him there for two hours while she was with “a mystery male companion", and that her son would have been traumatised by the incident.
Sharon insists her son joined her for dinner, and she had witnesses to support her story.
The newspaper has since apologised for printing the story and will pay damages to charity. It says it believed the story was true at the time of publication, but now accepts it is untrue and apologies to Sharon.
