Horror spoof "Scary Movie 4" has topped the North America box office this weekend, taking $41 million.
The latest part in the comedy series, the film set a new Easter weekend record after beating the $30 million set by Jodie Foster thriller "Panic Room" in 2002.
The movie, released six years after the first "Scary Movie" film was released, stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall and satirises films including "The Grudge", "War of the Worlds", "The Village", "Saw" and "Saw II".
"We couldn't have asked for a more impressive opening for "Scary Movie 4" and are so proud to have accomplished this only six months after our company launched," Bob Weinstein says.
"This exceptional opening proves that this franchise has tremendous staying power."
"Ice Age: The Meltdown" was second at the weekend, raking in around $20 million. In third was baseball comedy "The Benchwarmers", starring Rob Schneider. Disney’s animal animation "The Wild" entered at number four.
