Gnarls Barkley’s single “Crazy” has made chart history as the UK’s first chart-topper based solely on download sales.
Until this month, download sales could not be included towards a chart position unless the song was also available in stores. But new rules mean downloads can now be counted if the physical version goes on sale the following week.
“Crazy” has been downloaded over 30,000 times, a spokesperson for music store HMV says, which “ represents a watershed in how the charts are compiled, but shows that legal downloads have come of age".
"It is an outstanding single so I don't think we are going to see this happening with a song every week."
Gnarls Barkley is a collaboration between Grammy nominees DJ Danger Mouse - famed for mixing the Beatles’ "White Album" with Jay-Z’s "The Black Album", to create the much-talked-about "The Grey Album" - and rapper Cee-Lo.
"Crazy" generated a buzz after being used on a radio commercial.
