Sir Elton John is donating 10,000 of his flamboyant outfits and designer cast-offs this week to help AIDS victims in a temporary shop in New York called Elton's Closet.
The sale will run for five days at Manhattan's Rockefeller Center and is being co-sponsored by Saks Fifth Avenue and Top of the Rock. It includes accessories, sweaters and suits worn by Sir Elton and his partner David Furnish, 43.
"This is the first time that we've done the sale in New York," John said during a press conference. "We've done it before in America, in Atlanta. We've done three in London before. The object of this sale is to get rid of all our unwanted street clothes. Only a few as you can see to raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. It is really an important thing. We don't want to hang on to anything we don't need anymore. Throughout the years we've raised two and a half million dollars by doing these kinds of things."
"There is the most extraordinary collection from t-shirts to baseball caps to shoes to flamboyance to classic. Spend some money and help other people who desperately need their live to be changed and improved and you'll be doing a really good thing," the singer says of the sale.
Since 1992, the Elton John AIDS Foundation has raised more than $90 million (£51 million) to support HIV/AIDS prevention and service programs worldwide. Pieces designed by Dior, Prada, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton are being sold for as low as $15 dollars. All proceeds go to the charity.
