Broadway producer Martin Richards, whose The Producer Circle Company co-produced the Oscar winning movie “Chicago", is suing Miramax for $10 million for not giving him his share of the movie-musical's profits.
Richards, who bought rights to the murderous musical after its first Broadway run, is pissed because Miramax have failed to pay up the promised percentage of the $300 million box office takings the blockbuster movie starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere generated.
He says he’s also been short-changed of profits from DVD sales and overseas distribution of the movie, that was the most profitable of any film produced by Miramax.
"While PCC is unable to determine with precision the amounts that it is owed, it estimates that Miramax's breach of contract has cost it no less than $10 million," court papers reveal.
"Chicago" was released in 2003 and won six Academy Awards. Including Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones, as well as trophies for Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.
A spokesperson for Miramax she had not seen the legal action and couldn’t comment on the case against them.
