Newcomer Q'Orianka Kilcher, who stars as the legendary Pocohontas in her first movie, the upcoming epic "The New World", has the style and beauty that is likely to cast her as the next It girl in Hollywood.
The beautiful 15-year-old is part Huachipaeri and Quechua Indian on her father's Peruvian side, and she was born in Germany to a Swiss mother. Adding to the international flavor, she grew up in Hawaii and California and has a large extended family in Peru. Q'Orianka, who used to sing for money on a Santa Monica sidewalk, was chosen over thousands of other young actresses for the part, and says that before the film she had never even heard of her co-stars, Christian Bale and Colin Farrell.
Not that she's totally out of it as far as Hollywood is concern -- her second cousin is singer Jewel Kilcher - she says that she just doesn't watch many movies.
The new actress plays the historic figure Pocahontas, the Powhatan princess who was between 10 and 12 years old when English explorers landed in Virginia ("the new world") in 1607. Q'Orianka was 14 when the filming took place and she turns 16 next month on February 11.
Q'Orianka (pronounced kor-ee-AN-kuh) was homeschooled although she did try school once when she was 11 but only the trial only lasted nine months. She told a reporter that her school days were traumatizing: "I’m not an easy crier, but I came home every day crying. There was the popular group; the unpopular group; and then, the very, very unpopular group."
She's done a bunch of interviews to promote the film and in all of them she comes across as very mature for a 15-year-old, although she did make the mistake of confessing that it was her first kiss ever when Colin Farrell, 29, smooched her.
Since then, she been asked repeatedly about "the kiss" and says that Colin later apologized for kissing her just after he'd sucked on some ciggies. The graceful Q'Orianka says the apology wasn't necessary -- even if he did taste like an ashtray. "I was so scared," she says, "I was half-there and half-not-even-there."
Then added, "God, I wish I had never told anyone it was my first kiss."
"The New World" opens this Friday, January 20.
