Hey, hey, it's the monkeys! Arctic Monkeys lead singer Alex Turner is the coolest man on the planet, according to this year's NME magazine Cool List, which seeks to identify the hottest stars in the world of music.
The Arctic Monkeys — Alex Turner, Matt Helders, Andy Nicholson, all 19, and Jamie Cook, 20 — a "grot rock" group who sing about not getting into nightclubs are reaching the big time by bypassing heavyweight music companies and promoting themselves via word-of-mouth on the internet and allowing their fans to swap songs in forums.
"What’s happened has been proper hysterical," Alex has said of the band's meteoric rise this year. "If I say ‘phenomenon’ it sounds like I’m right up my own arse, but we’d be daft to act like we didn’t realise how incredible the last year’s been. When it all started we were like ‘fucking hell, what’s going off here?’"
The band's debut single, I Bet You Look Good on The Dance Floor, knocked one of Britain’s more heavily promoted girl bands, the Sugababes, from the number one slot this week. The Arctic Monkeys’ first album, due in January, is expected to be one of the fastest selling records of 2006.
