Ozzfest turned into Eggfest over the weekend as Sharon Osbourne reportedly asked bands on the tour to pelt heavy metal legends Iron Maiden with eggs, beer, cups and other debris after Bruce Dickinson made fun of Ozzy.
The feuding erupted at the Ozzfest concert in Devore, California, when rowdy Black Sabbath fans began to chant for Ozzy while Maiden was performing. Several people in the crowd then began to throw eggs, lighters, and bottle tops at the stage. Iron Maiden’s frontman, Dickinson, told the crowd to break the arms of the hurlers.
This may be the result of Dickinson being quoted in Kerrang! as saying that Ozzy uses a teleprompter on stage and he also made fun of heavy-metal singers who do reality shows. Them's fighting words to Sharon.
Steppin' Out's Chaunce Hayden reported that Sharon and her daughter Kelly were spotted that afternoon asking members of some Ozzfest bands to pelt Dickinson with eggs. More hilarity ensued when the PA system cut in and out ("technical difficulties") several times during Maiden's set.
, After Maiden finished, Sharon took the stage to a chorus of boos and called Dickinson a "prick" while praising the rest of the band and their crew. Maiden will be replaced by Velvet Revolver for the rest of the tour.
In the past few days, more than a thousand angry Maiden fans have signed a petition they plan to send to Ozzy’s wife, with some signers wishing her "bodily harm."
Sharon wrote on the official website: "From day one, Bruce Dickinson started berating Ozzy and belittling the Ozzfest audience. Out of 200-plus bands over the last 10 years, he has been the only person who hasn't had the Ozzfest spirit. He thought he was at a battle of the bands, always making comments about other artists."
Sharon also states Dickinson's bandmates have approached her husband and apologized for their singer's behavior, saying they were "embarrassed" by his actions.
